WHO WE ARE

Qedamawi is a studio dedicated to the authentic representation of African stories from our own perspective.

Qedamawi was established in early 2018 with a fundamental objective of creating a comic book that is both authored and designed by Africans, representing not only Africans themselves, but also a broader audience. Swiftly, we embarked on the artistic development of alternate versions of historical figures from Ethiopia, which resonated well with a dedicated online community. Qedamawi comics endeavors to establish a platform that will showcase original narratives rooted in the rich cultural heritage of this remarkable continent.

BUGNAD, our first feature comic book!

BUGNAD is our first feature comic book. Aiming at presenting the majestic Ethiopian hisory in a different perspective, we have developed a digital novel that is comprised of various characters, legends and historical events.  This ‘Comic book’ took about three years to finalize the story and bring it to life. The story takes place in a fictional city called Bugnad, hence, whose architecture and tradition is inspired by ancient Ethiopian dynasties.

The. BUGNAD story.

BUGNAD is the name of the city where our story happens. The story centers around two main characters Ghuddit and Gayem who are from opposite ends of the social spectrum. Ghuddit is raised in the royal castle with her father who has served multiple kings as a senior advisor and captain of the royal guards. She lost her mother as a child and is thus heavily influenced by her father and need to honor her family in battle. In a world where women’s role is limited, she attempts to fight to be part of the royal guard and serve the newly crowned king.

Gayem on the other hand is a petty thief who grew up in the streets of Bugnad living on a day to day basis fending for himself by stealing anything of value he can get his hands on. He has led a hard life but it has hardened him over the years. He is a very smart and witty character that opts to use his mind than force to get what he wants. At the beginning of our story we find him trying to sneak into the castle ground during the day of the king’s coronation to acquire something for a client that has offered him money in exchange for his skills. That is where our two heroes first meet. She tries to stop him but he gets the better of her and escapes with the artifact he was sent to steal. She vows to find and recover what is stolen so begins their journey.

The story is rooted in the fantasy genre that are based off of old Ethiopian lore (afe tarik). Most of our characters are mashups of different historical and legendary characters in Ethiopian lore.

Ghuddit

Prince Sinadom

Gayem

Lord Hataz

Commander Tintag

Ghuddit is the only Daughter of Lord Hataz and defies the ways of most of the women in the land by training with the sons of war. This has earned her the name ‘Ghuddit’ from the people because they are astonished by her. Ghuddit believes that one day she will hold a very influential and great position in the army.

Sole heir to the throne, the sudden death of prince Sinadom’s father has made him ascend to King of Kings, yet his youth and inexperience raises doubts. With untested leadership, the kingdom wonders if he will prevail.

Gayem is a renowned and elusive mercenary. His shrewd tactics make him invisible to the city guards, allowing him to carry out the most devious tasks for those who offer a hefty payment.

Lord Hataz is an advisor to the king, renowned for his wisdom and deep knowledge. He hails from a lineage of counsellors, who have served the crown for generations and currently serves as the king’s right hand, confidant, and ally.

In the realm of warriors, Ras Tintag’s name resounds with grandeur – the venerable General Commander of the Bugnad army’s reputation echoes far, reaching the heights of greatness with his indomitable prowess in battle and his ferocious strategies that leave foes trembling in fear. Yet, the peace that embraces the land have shackled his true might, preventing his glorious manifestation upon the battlefield.
